Amazon’s publishing arm will have a bigger challenge than ever to get back to profitability.
The company said on Tuesday that it would be shutting down its publishing division, which it acquired in 2016.
Amazon said it would shut down its retail division in 2018 and its online business in 2019.
Amazon’s online publishing business will be a casualty, but its retail business will remain strong.
Amazon’s retail business accounted for nearly a third of its $1.5 billion in revenue in the second quarter, the company said.
The business will see “substantial changes”, it said, and it will have no plans to shut it down.
Amazon also announced that it is selling a number of books in India.
The publisher said that it had sold more than 3,500 titles in India during the second half of 2018.
